comspace develops Bielefeld 360° App

On behalf of the Neuen Westfälische, the leading newspaper in OWL, and of the local radio station Radio Bielefeld, we have developed an App that allows a digital tour through Bielefeld and imparts lots of interesting information and perspectives.

Appropriate to the 800th anniversary of the city of Bielefeld, the App is now available in the App Stores of Apple and Android. A 360° panorama of the city, taken at the Sparrenburg, Bielefeld’s landmark, is the starting point. From there, visitors get to 25 places and sights of the city, for example the town hall, the railway station or the Schüco-Arena. These can also be explored via a 360° image, and offer interesting historical and current details by supplementing images in a picture gallery, a video and various audio additions, spoken by a Radio Bielefeld presenter.

To process and reduce the huge data volume of the various information formats (big panorama image, videos, audio files, texts) in such a way that there would be no loss of quality plus a short loading time on the mobile, was a technical challenge for our developer team. The implementation of the App was made in the Apache Cordova Framework that is based on web standards such as HTML, CSS and JavaScript, and also allows a presentation-optimized delivery of the App for various platforms such as iOS and Android. The App is also adapted for various terminal devices so that a virtual tour is possible on a smartphone as well as on a tablet.
